Motocross Goggles

It may seem at first like there is nothing much to say or know about this plastic gadget but this is completely not true. Using Motocross Goggles is important  for your safety and at race time the significance of high quality eyewear is even greater.

Motocross Goggles protect your eyes from small flying objects. This is obvious. Even the cheapest and scratched Goggles  will do this so this is not the reason why one should use new Goggles. Except from protecting your eyes from small stones and other flying things, the eyewear protection protects your eyes from dust on the track. Lots of dust for a long period of time can cause your eyes infections and other discomforts that you can avoid.

It is also very important you get the best view possible of the road/track/single while riding. Here is a simple scenario: Say you go on high speed and in the middle of a turn there is a medium size rock lying. You can't see it because your goggles are scratched and the sun reflects in your goggles at the very second you go in that turn. You hit the rock and probably crash. Scratched Goggles are also difficult to clean because the dirt get stacked in the scratches.

Goggles dirt and scratches issue is most important while racing. You don't have time to stop, take the goggles off, clean and put back to place. The less scratches you have on your Motocross goggles, the more dirt and dust they can take and still provide you with a good view on the track.

On wet and muddy race conditions many riders use "tear - offs" which are made of transparent plastic and can be tear off from the goggles during race time. Pulling this tear - off off is actually removing the mud and creates a clean lens for the rider.

Another issue worth writing about is the strap. It is very unpleasant when your goggle slip off and cover your eyes so you can't see a thing. It is even worse if happens at the middle of a race. Today's Goggles have non - slip silicone on strap to prevent the strap from slipping while riding. This is important characteristics as enduro riders ride through trees and bushes that may pull strap. Even normal and non extreme riding conditions may cause the strap to sleep.

Foam - has 2 roles: filter air around the lens and be the connecting material between the goggle's frame and the rider's face. The foam "works" hard as it has to provide good contact between face and frame while being soaked with salty sweat. It has to be made of durable and high quality material or else it turns into crumbs that  get into the rider's eyes.

Nose protection - some goggles has it and other don't. It is helpful in places with strong sun radiation.

When buying Motocross Goggle you need to pay attention to the following:

  • Make sure it feats your helmet. Don't buy oversized goggles.
  • Test lens for good transparency.
  • Test lens for good color (don't buy if it is too dark).
  • Make sure you have enough stretch for strap.
  • Look for the silicone in the strap - very important.
  • Ask for replacement lenses (darker/brighter or different color).
  • Make sure there is a good contact between foam and your face (so dust will not penetrate).

As usual, we looked popular dirt riding eyewear on the net and here are the results:
