Scott Genius boot

Scott has been around since 1958, and is best known for creating the first motocross-specific goggle;  Some people  might remember that somewhere in the late 70's Scott also manufactured boots but it has been decades since Scott manufactured a Motocross boot.

Now Scott is back again in the MX footwear business with the new "Genius" motocross boot. The Genius boot bring many innovations to the Dirt riding boots industry: the first thing is the modern (some may say futuristic)  looks. In addition, instead of the old leather & plastic used in all other MX boots models, the Genius boot is made entirely of a material from DuPont called Hytrel this polyester provide the flexibility of rubbers, the strength of plastics, and the processibility of thermoplastics. A major benifit of having a boot made of hard parts is that each part is replaceable unlike the leather-plastic boots we are all used to.

The Scott Genius has three buckles instead of the ordinary four. I have to say that this is one of the best buckles design I have ever saw. The buckles are easy to use, nice to feel and there are just three of them so you will never forget the fourth buckle :)

the ankle pivot hinge provide resistance and in addition, prevents over-extending the joint fore and aft which eliminates damage to your tendons and muscles.

Weight: though looking heavy, Scott's Genius is not a heavy boot. We assume it weighs like it's competitors the Alpinestars Tech 10, Gaerne SG-10 and Sidi Crossfire SRS.

Comfort:  After following the fitting instructions witch were not very complicated, the Scott genius fit very well. Adjusting the ankle donuts was simple and painless as well. The sole is not padded enough. There isn't much arch built into the design and the bootie is thin on the bottom.

Feel: The tuff Hytrel is very durable but allows no feel to the rider when shifting and using the rear break. Scott found a great solution for this problem: Sure-Feel Shifter Pad. A small and softer part of Hytrel was installed where the foot contacts the shift lever. This allows more feel. We were skeptical but we tried it and it works!  Feel on the break is not very good as the sole is very stiff and delivers very little information to the rider.

Protection: The Genius is very protective as your foot and shin are well covered with a thick layer of Hytrel. The sole is the only weakness as it looks a bit thin.

break-in: No break in is needed as no leather is used in this boot. After 2 or 3 rides we started feeling more natural with the Genius but this can be related to us, getting used to the Genius.

Durability: After a very intensive month with every-day motocross and enduro riding the Scott Genius showed no signs of  wear and this includes the sole. One of the mounting bolts fall out, but the adhesive kept the sole tight.

Summary: The Scott Genus is a unique boot. It brings a different and fresh looks and top notch technical characteristics. It also has some flaws that need to be fixed: a little more comfort, some more color combinations and feel on the break would make it a much better boot. 500 USD is a lot of money and for this money you can get more comfort and a very good protection.  What you can't get is that fresh, amazing looks. Choosing the Genius is more an emotional decision then rational but still, it's not a bad one!
